Big GS Meets Little GS – The BMW G650GS Sertao

Ah! Today, the big fat red girl meets her smaller, slimmer, but equally pretty white sibling. And so, the GS siblings meet for the first time.

Welcome home, li’l one! The Big Red meets the Little White – GS united!

She’s beautiful, graceful, and just does everything so well. And many a times when admiring her gorgeous looks while sipping a cup of coffee from a near distance away, I’ve caught her posing for fans who instinctively whipped out their iPhones to capture a selfie while standing beside her. She’s not only a looker, but the R1200GS LC is an excellent all-rounder and is superbly comfortable on long distance mile munching tours.

But she and I share a common challenge Continue reading “Big GS Meets Little GS – The BMW G650GS Sertao”

To Melaka, 530km round trip – for Dinner!

Siu Hon suggested heading to Melaka for dinner, and since any reason to ride is a good reason! So off to Melaka we headed, and we made that 530km round trip – just for dinner!

We arranged to meet 6:30pm at Petronas, Gelang Patah. But the weather didn’t seem to agree with us. The skies opened before we left Singapore, and poured onto us all before we could even rendezvous at Gelang Patah for the ride up. This however, gave us the perfect opportunity to test some of our recently acquired wet weather gear in prep for our major trip to Northern Thailand in December.

Meet up at Gelang Patah before travelling up north.

As you can see, Siu Hon’s wet weather gear didn’t hold up too well. His waterproof boots turned into a mini aquarium – collecting water that cascaded from his poorly sealed waist area all the way into the boots itself! Eeek!

Pirelli Scorpion Trail II – Review at 16,152km (10,036mi)

And so I swapped out my set of 16,000km or 10,000 miles Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2’s from my BMW R1200GS LC for a new set of…. Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2’s! Yes, I liked the tires enough to want to buy it again! It has exceeded all my expectations on the tires.

In fact, if it weren’t for the fact that my rear tires recently got TWO punctures, and that I’m planning for a major trip soon, I’d probably feel comfortable running the tires for another 4,000km at least. Yes, it IS a heck of a long lasting adventure / sport touring tires!

Brand new set of Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2 waiting to go onto my R1200GS LC.
Manufactures in week 19 of 2018…
…and week 11 of 2018 – pretty fresh tires!

Sunday Morning Dirt Trail Ride

As if last week’s dirt riding with Dirt State wasn’t enough, we headed to the trails again this week. Only this time, with our very own bikes!

Nice, compact dirt – nothing too challenging (for now).
Magnificent view from the top.
Loose gravel + big bike = no fun! =(

Maintenance on the R1200GS LC

So it’s time for servicing on the BMW R1200GS wethead again. As I’m preparing for a major trip in December, thought it would be prudent to get this out of the way. This round, it’s air filter, spark plugs, and final drive gear oil on top of the usual engine oil replacement.

Removing the ignition coil to access the spark plug.
Spark plug removal.

2D1N Impromptu Ride

It was an impromptu ride. I had taken the Thursday and Friday off work, and had only decided to go for a ride on Wednesday evening. Even in the morning of Thursday when we met at 5am at GP Petronas, the ride plan was still sketchy. And we just made up the plan as we went along!

First stop – Tasik Biru (Blue Lake) of Muadzam Shah!

Facing the blue, blue, VERY blue lake!
The 4 men who were free to ride on a Thursday’s moment’s notice.
We were friendly. They were friendly. We were all friendly. =)

Saturday Morning Ride to Endau Rompin

The weather was beautiful on this Saturday morning, and what better way to spend it than to take a ride? It was only the 2 of us on today’s ride, and we could afford to, well, go a little faster on the road. =)

Eddy and his Street Triple.
Me and my red GS.

Alpinestars Fastback 2 Drystar Boots

I went shopping at one of my favorite shops – Racing World Singapore! Picked up a pair of Alpinestars Fastback v2 Drystar boots as a replacement to my 2.5yr old Sidi Mythos Goretex low-cut boots. My old pair of Sidi’s had seen some better days, and the sole is beginning to exhibit some wear. In fact, on wet days, I sometimes experience some slipping whenever I put my foot down at stationary stops – not cool!

Transporting the boots home – RokStraps!

Hex ezCAN Installation on my R1200GS LC

The Hex ezCAN has quite a reputation in the BMW R1200GS world. It’s a (relatively) inexpensive accessories manager for the BMW R1200LC, R1200, K1600 & F800 that hooks up directly to the CAN bus of the bike and does quite a number of neat tricks – all WITHOUT having to splice any wires on the bike, and thus (as Hex claims) maintains your warranty.

Personally, I wasn’t too concerned with the warranty part as my 2014 GS is already way past its warranty stage. But the neat tricks that the little device has up its sleeves was what attracted me to purchase it.

Here’s Hex own commercial on what it does for the bike:

I placed an online order and received it in my mail within a week or so. It comes in a cute little package that somewhat resembles a pack of army rations.

The cute package that arrived in my mail.
